The Consortium List Recommends (Week of August 2)

After a brief, one-week absence, here a few ideas about how to enjoy your time after work this week:

  • Book Launch Party for TJ Walker: Tuesday night, 5:30 PM, TJ Walker Speaking Headquarters (Celebrate the publication of Walker’s new book How to Give a Pretty Good Presentation.)
  • Gawker.TV’s Television Trivia Night: Tuesday night, 7 PM, Destination Bar (Come get your TV trivia fix with MC Kirk Larsen and music by DJ Frankenmack.)
  • Get Off Your Knees: Tuesday night, 8 PM, The Bell House (This week’s edition of the comedy show will feature Chris Gethard from The Chris Gethard Show and Variety’s “Ten Comics to Watch.”)
  • First Wednesday August: Wednesday night, 7 PM, Olives at W Union Square (Network with other interactive advertising professionals in the restaurant’s lounge area on the hotel’s ground floor.)
  • Beasties Book Release Party: Thursday night, 7 PM, Powerhouse Arena (Ask author Diana Schoenbrun about making “22 mischievous [stuffed] monsters that go bump in the night” and catch a special music performance by The Debutante Hour.)

As always, if you’re wondering if I’m going, please feel free to ask.  As I hear about others (Suggestions are always welcome), I’ll tweet about them here and hashtag them “ConsortiumList”.  Hope to see you at one of these!

Havaianas, Threadless.com Join Forces for New Flip-Flops

image

Flip-flop manufacturer Havaianas and online t-shirt design company Threadless.com teamed up via the “Threadless Loves Havaianas” design competition to produce a new line of flip-flops for the summer.  Threadless community members were able to submit designs, which were then voted on by their peers.  The six winning designs were selected from more than 600 around the world and are now a limited edition sandal collection on sale now.  [Ed: I received a pair free and am posting about this because I unfortunately missed the launch party for the collection here in New York, but you can find more info on the sandals here.]

Card.biz Hosts Moving Target of a Party

image

Card.biz held a party in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District neighborhood two weeks ago which was supposed to take place at the rooftop bar of The Standard Hotel (home of the often written about Boom Boom Room).  Unfortunately, a bit of miscommunication between the company and the hotel led the party’s venue to change from the rooftop bar to The Standard Biergarten and finally to the rooftop bar of the Brass Monkey around the corner.  (A good a compromise as any.)  Still not entirely sure what the

party was all about, but because of the logistical issues, attendees who RSVPed through Facebook received notes from the company’s CEO, indicating that accounts would be free to those who wanted them.  (Generous, right?)  So, if you’re interested in checking out this “virtual business card” business, take a look over here.  In the meantime, here are a couple of shots from the party(ies).

Drinking Club Talks Turkey

image

[Ed: Yes, that’s the best headline I could come up with.] Sean Captain’s Drinking Club took up residence at the wine bar Pierre Loti in Manhattan’s Union Square neighborhood about two weeks ago this Tuesday, sampling some wines (and beers) and the bar’s

delicious paninis [Ed: If most paninis you eat come from delis in midtown, then you’ll agree after you try one.].  Although a bit lacking when it comes to air conditioning, it’s a great spot for people watching as you can see from these photos.

The Consortium List Recommends (Week of July 19)

Certainly feels like it’s that time of summer when you should be getting out of town for a few days, doesn’t it?  In the meantime, here are a couple of thoughts on what to do if you’re not just yet:

  • Fourth Annual Cupcake Craft Night at Etsy Labs: Monday afternoon, 4 PM, 55 Washington Street, Suite 512 (Satisfy both your cupcake craving and creative streak with cupcake-themed craft projects.)
  • Gaming + 30: The Future of Gaming: Tuesday night, 7 PM, 92YTribeca (This month’s Y+30 will focus on what gaming will look like +30 years with a “panel representing game design, development, and commercialization on a variety of platforms.)
  • Drinking Club | İyi Akşamlar!: Tuesday night, 7:30 PM, Pierre Loti (Sean Captain’s Drinking Club honors a French writer who went native in Istanbul.)
  • Get Off Your Knees: Tuesday night, 8 PM, The Bell House (Sara Schaefer hosts an evening of comedy with Charlyne Yi, Sean Patton, and more.)
  • Midnight Juggernauts Live: Saturday night, 10 PM, Brooklyn Bowl (Be sure to click on the link to RSVP for the performance.)

As always, if you’re wondering if I’m going, please feel free to ask.  As I hear about others (Suggestions are always welcome), I’ll tweet about them here and hashtag them “ConsortiumList”.  Hope to see you at one of these!
